Qualifying Sites Announced for 125th U.S. Open

Local and final qualifying sites for the 125 th U.S. Open Championship at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club have been announced by the USGA. The U.S. Open is being contested at the venerable Pittsburgh-area club for a record 10th time from June 12-15.

Local qualifying, conducted over 18 holes at 110 sites in 43 U.S. states, Canada and Mexico, will take place between April 16-May 19. Those advancing players will join a group of locally exempt competitors in final qualifying, which will be conducted over 36 holes. This final stage will be held in England and Japan (May 19) and Canada (June 2) as well as 10 U.S. sites, one on May 19 and the remaining nine on June 2.

Online player registration for the 2025 U.S. Open will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at champs.usga.org and will continue through 5 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, April 9.

“It is of great importance that thousands of professional and amateur golfers with diverse backgrounds will once again have an opportunity to compete for a place in this year’s U.S. Open and ultimately play in our national championship,” said USGA Chief Championships Officer John Bodenhamer. “Allied Golf Associations in the United States, Tours in Europe, Canada and Japan, and National Federations will collaborate in providing a path to the championship through both qualifying stages to historic Oakmont Country Club where the world’s greatest golfers will compete.”

The USGA accepted 10,052 entries for the 2024 championship at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club’s Course No. 2. It was the third time entries surpassed the 10,000-mark. The record of 10,187 was established in 2023 at The Los Angeles (Calif.) Country Club’s North Course.

Illini Country Club, in Springfield, Ill., will hold a U.S. Open local qualifier for the 46th consecutive year in which qualifying has been conducted, and the 51st time since 1973. South Bend (Ind.) Country Club is a local site for the 49th time since 1961. Maketewah Country Club, in Cincinnati, Ohio, has been a local venue in 47 of the last 50 years. Riverton (Wyo.) Country Club and Ironwood Country Club, in Palm Desert, Calif., will each host local qualifying for the 27th time. Collindale Golf Course, in Fort Collins, Colo., has been a host site since 2003.

To be eligible, an amateur must have a Handicap Index® not exceeding 0.4, or be a professional. There are 14 local qualifying sites in California, the most of any state. Florida will host 13 local qualifiers.

The final qualifying venues in Summit, N.J., and Columbus, Ohio, will use two courses. Canoe Brook Country Club, with its North and South Courses, will serve as a site for the 20th time since 1980. Max Greyserman was the co-medalist last year, advancing to his first U.S. Open, where he tied for 21st. In Columbus, Kinsale Golf & Fitness Club and the Lakes Golf & Country Club will be paired for the first time. Each course has previously been in the final qualifying rotation.

Woodmont Country Club, in Rockville, Md., will be a final site for the 37th time in the last 39 years, with only the North Course used for the 11th consecutive time. Springfield (Ohio) Country Club will host final qualifying for the 16th time. Five-time final qualifying site Old Memorial Golf Club, in Tampa, Fla., is hosting for the first time since 2006.

U.S. Open final qualifying returns to Valencia (Calif.) Country Club for the first time since 1993, where then-16-year-old amateur Ted Oh was one of four who advanced to play at Baltusrol Golf Club. Duke University Golf Club, in Durham, N.C., Piedmont Driving Club, in Atlanta, Ga., and Wine Valley Golf Club, in Walla Walla, Wash., will each be sites for a second time. Bent Tree Country Club is hosting alone for the first time in Dallas, Texas, after being paired with Northwood Club on two previous occasions.

Walton Heath Golf Club, in Surrey, England, was a site when international qualifying began in 2005. The Old and New Courses will host final qualifying for the 18th time. Lambton Golf & Country Club is a site in Canada’s Ontario province. Davis Thompson, who qualified in Canada last year, tied for ninth at Pinehurst No. 2 and was the low non-exempt finisher. Tarao Country Club’s West Course, in Shiga Prefecture, is a first-time site in Japan.

Ken Venturi (1964) and Orville Moody (1969) are the only players to win the U.S. Open after qualifying through both local and final stages. Gene Littler (1961), Julius Boros (1963), Jerry Pate (1976), Steve Jones (1996), Michael Campbell (2005) and Lucas Glover (2009) won after advancing through final qualifying.

Several U.S. Open champions have advanced to the championship through both local and final qualifying at some point in their careers, including Glover, David Graham, Lou Graham, Hale Irwin, Tony Jacklin, Lee Janzen, Tom Kite, Johnny Miller, Corey Pavin, Curtis Strange, Lee Trevino, Gary Woodland and Fuzzy Zoeller.

The U.S. Open was previously contested at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club in 1927, 1935, 1953, 1962, 1973, 1983, 1994, 2007 and 2016. World Golf Hall of Famers Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Ernie Els, Tommy Armour, Larry Nelson and Miller are among the champions.
